STS Roe Cures

Plain Borax Cure (an heirloom recipe that keeps catching steelhead)
Equipment Needed:
20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Booster- 1-2 boxes
Shallow cardboard corrugated box (the type under soda cases) that fits in the refrig
Sharp scissors
Paper towels
Plastic containers to freeze and store roe or canning jars and lids to use with vacuum sealer
Oh yea, some whole skeins of roe

1.Gently wash whole skeins of roe to get blood out.

2. Place whole skeins on several layers of paper towels in the card board box. Place in the refrig for 24 hours to dry.
3. Cut up pieces into usable bait-sized chunks.
4. Put down fresh paper towels inside cardboard box. Sprinkle a layer of Borax to cover the paper towels and spread the bait pieces out on the towels. Sprinkle with another layer of Borax.
5. Place the box of bait in the refrig for 12-24 hours until "done"- (achieved the desired dryness).
6. Layer pieces between fresh Borax into a plastic container or a canning jar and use a vacuum attachment to seal the jars.
7. Freeze them.
*Judging "done" is difficult. Too long will make the eggs overly dry and they won’t milk well.
** If you don’t put the eggs in the refrig to dry they can sometimes turn out dark.

Natural Colored Gooey Roe Cure
Equipment Needed
Skeins of roe

1 and 1/2 cups of granulated sugar
1 tablespoon of salt
4 cups of Borax
3-10 drops of shrimp oil
Ziplock bag or glass dish to store roe in refrig overnight

1. Mix the above ingredients
2. Cut the skeins open in half lengthwise
3. Place skeins into the dry mixture and store in refrig for 24 hours.
4. Shake off the dry mixture and rinse the skeins gently with water to remove any powder stuck onto the skein.
5. Dry on paper towels for 12 hours in the refrig.
6. Vacuum bag or vacuum jar the skeins.
** This recipe makes a nice gooey roe that stays on the hook well and milks well even after freezing.

Salmon Cures with Pro Cure or Pro Glow (for the bad manicure look)

Equipment Needed

Skeins of roe
Pro Glow Egg Cure (red or pink)
A big plastic container with a tight fitting lid that fits in refrig

1. Cut the skeins open
2. Sprinkle the Pro Cure or Pro Glow onto the opened skein lightly and gently work the crystals between the eggs without squishing them.
3. Place them in the plastic container for 12 hours. Gently move (don’t scramble them) the egg skeins around in the liquid after 12 hours to be sure that all the eggs are in the bright "marinade".
4. After 24 hours pour off the bright pink swill and set the eggs out to dry on a plastic screen or thin slats of wood for 8-12 hours.
5. Vacuum bag them and place them in a large freezer container so they won’t get squished.

Mix 2 cups borax and 1 package of orange or strawberry jello (depending on the color you want), put in 2 or 3 drops of red or orange food color and mix. After washing and drying the skiens, coat each heavily with the mixture, especially between the segments of eggs that are attached to the skeins. Put the skiens in a ziplock and refrigerate. The eggs will drop alot of moisture, you should end up with liquid that still has some undisolved granules in it, if this makes since. You can use the roe in about a day, but the great thing about this recipe is that the roe freezes beautifully with almost no difference in quality. Kind of like freezing fillets in water.
